Show Notes

  • Introduction: Macara Slobodian and Aliasgar Moosa welcomed everyone to the Moosa Slobodian Network books panel. The hosts introduced themselves and the panelists, Paul Daniel, Siena Trigiani, and Ashlyn, expressing enthusiasm for the scheduled discussion regarding the book “Anxiously Attached” (00:00:00).
  • Books with Lasting Impact – Siena Trigiani: Macara Slobodian asked the panel to discuss books that have left a lasting impact on them. Siena Trigiani highlighted three titles: “My F in Life”, “With Love and Courage” by Jagmeet Singh, and “Sparks Like Stars” by Nadia Hashimi. They noted that these books resonated with them because the protagonists overcame difficult circumstances—ranging from poverty to the challenges of immigration—to build better lives, illustrating the importance of following one’s dreams (00:02:24).
  • Books with Lasting Impact – Paul Daniel: Paul Daniel shared that “John F. Kennedy” by Charles P. Graves, which they read at age ten, was highly influential, sparking an early interest in politics, human rights, and accessibility issues. They also identified “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck as a lasting influence, explaining that both books taught them the value of social involvement and empathy for those living in poverty (00:05:35).
  • Books with Lasting Impact – Ashlyn: Ashlyn mentioned the book “Crossroads” as a title that left a lasting impact on them. They explained that the book, which focuses on the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, was memorable because it underscored the fragility of life and how quickly circumstances can change (00:08:45).
  • Review of “Anxiously Attached” – Paul Daniel: Paul Daniel provided initial thoughts on “Anxiously Attached: Becoming More Secure in Life and Love” by Jessica Baum, stating they were impressed despite having no prior knowledge of the book. They appreciated that the author drew from personal, practical experiences rather than purely clinical theories, making the content highly relatable for anyone seeking intimacy and secure relationships (00:20:38).
  • Review of “Anxiously Attached” – Siena Trigiani: Siena Trigiani expressed a strong interest in reading the book to better understand attachment styles in both friendships and romantic relationships. They reflected on their own past behaviors, noting that they previously struggled with loneliness and codependency, and hoped the book would provide clarity on why they engaged in clingy behaviors during their younger years (00:23:58).
  • Review of “Anxiously Attached” – Ashlyn: Ashlyn noted that while they had not yet read the book in its entirety, they listened to the nine-hour and 26-minute audible preview and found the material to be a compelling candidate for a weekend read (00:28:17).
  • Discussion on Post-COVID Connection: Aliasgar Moosa initiated a discussion regarding whether the definition of attachment has shifted since the COVID-19 pandemic and if there is lingering hesitation regarding large crowds or forming new social connections. Paul Daniel suggested that the pandemic exacerbated existing trends toward isolation, noting that while technology and social media serve as poor substitutes for genuine human contact, loneliness has become a significant and growing problem (00:29:20).
  • Personal Experience with Life Transitions: Aliasgar Moosa and Ashlyn discussed their shared experiences after graduating from Ross, noting the challenges of maintaining social circles after leaving that environment. They agreed that while these transitions initially felt isolating, they ultimately fostered personal growth and led them to develop independent routines and interests (00:34:45).
  • Virtual Connection and Community: Siena Trigiani reflected on the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 and their initial fear of isolation, which was effectively mitigated by the rise of virtual programming. They highlighted how platforms like Zoom and Google Meet helped maintain community connection, specifically praising initiatives like Techstravaganza for creating a supportive environment for those who are blind or visually impaired (00:40:44).
  • Professional Growth and Tool Utilization: Aliasgar Moosa shared how their role as a tech analyst allowed them to integrate tools like Google Workspace and Zapier into the Moosa Slobodian Network to grow their brand. Siena Trigiani agreed, noting that such opportunities for technical skill development contributed significantly to their own personal and professional growth (00:45:48).
  • Further Thoughts on “Anxiously Attached”: Macara Slobodian reflected on the book, noting that it was more effective and less clinical than typical self-help literature. They shared personal experiences with overthinking and feeling lost after graduating in 2020, emphasizing that broadening their horizons through various connection avenues helped diminish the feeling that their loneliness would be permanent (00:49:11).
  • The Nature of Loneliness: Paul Daniel revisited the book’s themes, noting that the author’s openness about their struggles with dating was highly relatable. The group discussed the increasing prevalence of loneliness in society, distinguishing between chosen solitude and involuntary loneliness, and concluded that addressing these attachment issues is a significant modern challenge (00:52:30).
  • Upcoming Programming – Siena Trigiani’s Shows: Siena Trigiani announced the upcoming schedule, including the “Cosmopolitan Culture Club” on June 4th and “The Song Bank” on June 5th. They also highlighted the “Melting Pot” on June 6th, featuring Nick Blazewitz, and the “Classical Cafe” with Samantha Ash (00:55:35).

They announced next month’s book selection as “The Huntress” by Kate Quinn, which is available in a human-narrated format on CELA and Audible (00:58:05).
