Jim Snyder, a long-time broadcaster, joined Ali for a conversation about hisshared experiences in the industry. Jim expressed his admiration for Don Collins, a big-picture thinker and a great developer of talent. He also shared his fond memories of working with Mike Collins, Wendy Duff, and other colleagues at Rogers. Jim mentioned that he had been in Canada for 18 years and that his career had taken a series of interesting turns, including a stint at CKPC where he worked under Dick Buchanan, a man known for his old-school approach to radio. Jim also reminisced about his time at Rogers, where he shared an office with Boomer and had a lot of fun. The conversation ended with Jim reflecting on how much time had passed since he left Rogers and how much he had enjoyed his time there.
Radio Broadcasting Evolution and Changes
Ali and Jim discussed the evolution of radio broadcasting and its current state. Jim shared his experiences from the past, highlighting the significant changes in the industry, such as automation systems, satellite technology, and voice tracking. He noted that radio stations now rely heavily on these systems, often running multiple stations from one location with minimal staff. Jim also mentioned the shift in consumer behavior, with people now able to access music on demand, reducing the need for live and local radio. Ali agreed, acknowledging the changes in the industry and the impact of corporations owning radio stations. Both agreed that radio is not dying, but evolving and changing significantly.
